چکیده

Advanced civilizations must radiate heat while utilizing planetary energy sources. This waste heat can be a thermodynamic marker of Earth-like civilization. Here we model such planetary radiation and propose a strategy for detecting an alien unintentional thermodynamic electromagnetic biomarker. We show that astronomically observable infrared civilization biomarkers can be detected within an interestingly large cosmic volume using a next generation large telescope. The outcome of such a search will be largely independent of alien communication modes and may have quantifiable statistical completeness as in a true census. Even a null result will help answer the question, ―why do we appear to be alone?‖ The detection of an alien heat signature in itself will demonstrate that civilization can achieve a phase of sustainable global-scale power consumption.

Global warming as a detectable thermodynamic marker of Earth-like extrasolar civilizations: the case for a telescope like Colossus

Earth-like civilizations generate heat from the energy that they utilize. The thermal radiation from this heat can be a thermodynamic marker for civilizations. Here we model such planetary radiation on Earth-like planets and propose a strategy for detecting such an alien unintentional thermodynamic electromagnetic biomarker. We show that astronomical infrared (IR) civilization biomarkers may be...

Statistical Analysis of Relationships between Monthly Maximum Temperatures in Iran and Global Mean Land-Ocean Temperature Anomalies

Global warming and the meaningful relationship between temperature and precipitation changes over different areas of the earth with temperature increment of the earth, are considered as the most important patterns of this century’s climate changes. Today, there is debate over climate change and global temperatures increasing. Damaging effects of this phenomenon on the planet is one of the most ...

Magnetospheric Radio Emission from Extrasolar Giant Planets: The Role of the Host Stars

We present a new analysis of the expected magnetospheric radio emission from extrasolar giant planets for a distance limited sample of the nearest known extrasolar planets. Using recent results on the correlation between stellar X-ray flux and massloss rates from nearby stars, we estimate the expected mass-loss rates of the host stars of extrasolar planets that lie within 20 pc of the Earth. We...

Models of Polarized Light from Oceans and Atmospheres of Earth-like Extrasolar Planets

Specularly reflected light, or glint, from an ocean surface may provide a useful observational tool for studying extrasolar terrestrial planets. Detection of seasurface glints would differentiate ocean-bearing terrestrial planets, i.e. those similar to Earth, from other terrestrial extrasolar planets. Sea-surface glints are localized and linearly polarized. The brightness and degree of polariza...
